Baby Cakes 

This sweet frog pond cake will ensure that baby’s first birthday is truly ribbiting! It’s fun and simple to make. 

Supplies:

  • Two (cooled) round cakes  (start wit h a mix or from scratch)

  • Buttercream icing:  mix 4 ½ cups powdered sugar, 1/3 cup butter, ¼ cup milk and 1 teaspoon vanilla.  You may need to add more powdered sugar to thicken the icing when using the decorating tube.

  • Decorating tube with star tip and basic tip

  • Gel or paste food coloring

  • Blue sugar sprinkles

  • Toothpicks

  • Tootsie Rolls®

  • Small frog toy

Directions:

Place first cake layer on a cake plate, a pply a light layer of frosting and top with the second cake layer. 

Mix frosting in individual bowls by color. 

Use a knife to spread the turquoise frosting into a pond shape.  Sprinkle with blue sprinkles for a glittery effect.  Use a knife to frost the sides of the cake.  Shape the lily pads with a knife in green icing.  If you are having trouble perfecting the shape, you can outline them with the plain tip. 

Use the star tip to make the grass and flowers.  The plain tip adds detail to the flowers.  Cut the Tootsie Rolls® into small pieces and attach to toothpicks for cat tails.

For the final touch, add the frog on top of one of the lily pads.
