Tiny Dancer

Your baby will be dreaming of the sugar plum fairy in this frothy confection.  Our model Sydney gives it a twirl in this tutu made by her mom.

To make the tutu you will need:

  • About 2 yards of tulle (you can use more than 1 color in the tutu if you like.)

  • ¼” wide elastic (a little bigger than your baby’s waist).

  • Thread and needle (don’t worry – the sewing part is very minimal!)

Start by determining the finished length of the tutu.  We like about 7 inches long for a baby.  Make a pattern, which is a rectangle:  4” wide X 14” long (this will give you a finished tutu which is 7” long.)  If you want a shorter or longer tutu, adjust the length of the pattern by taking the finished length times 2.  So if you want a 5” tutu, your pattern will be 4” wide X 10” long. Cut pieces of tulle using your pattern.  You can mix different colors if you like. Cut the elastic a little bigger than your baby’s waist.  Put it around your baby’s waist and safety pin it so it fits snug around her waist.  Take the elastic off your baby, but leave it pinned.  Sew the ends together where it is pinned, so you have an elastic circle.  Take each tulle strip and knot around the elastic as shown in the picture.  You can double the tulle strips if you like.  For a multi color effect, knot one color, then alternate knots in another color.  Continue knotting until elastic is covered in knotted tulle.
